Alexis Mac Allister gave his thoughts after Argentina's 1-0 win over Paraguay in the third matchday of the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup at the Monumental where he once again excelled in his new position as a central midfielder with Rodrigo De Paul and Enzo Fernandez as his wing backs.
Speaking about his adaptation to this new position, the Argentinos Juniors midfielder with a past at Boca and Brighton explained the transition he is undergoing at both La Albiceleste and his new club Liverpool. "It's more or less the same as I've been doing at club level. It's a new role for me but I feel very comfortable. Lionel (Scaloni) obviously asks me to manage the balance of the team a bit, to be careful when it comes to leaving but to help a bit more in the relays and it's to keep learning as I do every day. It's a position that I like a lot, I get a lot more contact with the ball and I feel comfortable".
Mac Allister also spoke about the way the game went and hinted that the feeling of happiness at the win was dampened by the result, given that they had ample opportunities to extend their slender lead. "We know that all our opponents are difficult and we knew that Paraguay is also one of them. Physically they are very strong, they always try to play very direct and we always go out on the pitch trying to give our best and show why we are the national team we are. I think we saw that today, maybe we were left with the regret that we could have scored a goal or two, especially in the first half, but we were happy with the result and the way we played.
Argentina maintained their unbeaten record in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup with a 1-0 win over Paraguay at the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires. Argentina found the only goal of the game three minutes into the first half when Nicolas Otamendi latched onto the ball from a corner kick with a great volley.
