Liverpool are so big that despite not playing, they are the talk of England and the world. This Saturday's FA Cup final saw Manchester City beat backyard rivals Manchester United, who, interestingly, are the Pool's bitter rivals. To their disgrace, the mockery of their defeat was shared between the Citizens and the Reds.

Beyond the ridiculous result, one of the characters that have been at the heart of Liverpool's recent history is Paul Tierney, the central referee who has once again been at the centre of another scandal in English football. After checking the VAR, Tierney awarded United a controversial penalty that led to a momentary equaliser. The referee called Grealish's handball.

The 42-year-old referee is approaching his first decade in the Premier League, where beyond his work, he has won fans and detractors, such as Jürgen Klopp, with whom he has been involved in heated tensions, such as the one reported by the Daily Mail in the last match against Tottenham.

Controversial Tierney and his dark past

"We have had our history with Tierney. I really don't know what this man has got on us. He will always say there's nothing, but it's not true. It can't be, I don't understand it," said the German, who days later was sanctioned by the FA as a clear example of a witch-hunt against Liverpool.
