The exciting encounters with Liverpool have become for Manchester City a labyrinth in which, at the moment, Guardiola can't find a way out. Their defeat in the Community Shield against the 'Reds' meant for the 'Cityzens' losing the first title of the season and an anniversary that is both celebrated in Liverpool and lamented in Manchester: City has a year and a half without winning a match against the Merseyside team in any competition.

The last win for Pep Guardiola's side against Jürgen Klopp's side dates back to February 7, 2021, when City inflicted a painful 1-4 defeat on Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League with a Gündogan double and goals from Sterling and Foden. Since then, Liverpool have resisted Pep's team, with the two 2-2 draws in the last Premier, the 2-3 in the FA Cup semifinals in favor of the 'Reds' and the recent 3-1 in the Community Shield.

The two leading teams in the league will not meet again until October 16 at Anfield in the Premier League, which on August 7 will be exactly a year and a half since the last 'Cityzen' triumph. If we filter results by fixtures at the Etihad, it has been two years since Liverpool last lost at City's ground since Pep's side thrashed them 4-0 on July 2020 with goals from De Bruyne, Foden, Sterling and Oxlade-Chamberlain own goal.

In head-to-head titles that have been contested in this year-and-a-half span, City have lifted the 21/22 Premier League, while Liverpool have lifted the 21/22 FA Cup and the 2022 Community Shield.

Almost three years without a Premier League win for Liverpool

The overall balance of results favors Liverpool, however, City reigns in the Premier League duels, as in the competition Klopp's team has accumulated almost three years without beating Pep Guardiola's team. The last 'Red' victory dates back to November 10, 2019, with a 3-1 with Fabinho, Salah and Mané as scorers. Liverpool will have the opportunity in the match on October 16 to avoid three years without beating City in the domestic league.
