Premier League leaders Liverpool are looking to strengthen their defensive line, and according to recent reports, they have set their sights on Sporting CP's promising defensive sensation Ousmane Diomande. The Ivory Coast international's buy-out clause stands at £70m, a figure that shows the Reds' determination in their quest to strengthen their defence.

Ousmane Diomande, just 20 years old, has enjoyed a meteoric rise since his arrival in Europe. After spending most of his formative years in his native country, he made the jump to Midtjylland in January 2022 before joining Sporting CP in January 2023. In 38 appearances for the Portuguese club, the young defender has made his mark with three goals and an assist, earning international recognition with four appearances for his national team.

Interest in Diomande is not limited to Liverpool, as big-name clubs have also expressed their admiration for the Ivorian centre-back. Despite reports placing Newcastle United as favourites, Liverpool have entered the race for his services, with their scouts closely monitoring his performances this season.

Liverpool's need to strengthen their defence is evident, with an ageing central unit led by Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk, both of whom are in their late 30s. With Matip's contract coming to an end, the search for a long-term defender is essential. Ousmane Diomande emerges as a viable option, and his youth could make him the ideal partner for Ibrahima Konate in the future.

Liverpool need defenders after TAA injury

Liverpool, however, are not putting all their eggs in one basket, as they are also considering Antonio Silva and Gonçalo Inacio as defensive options. The summer transfer window is shaping up to be an intriguing scenario, and the question remains whether Liverpool will shell out the £70m needed to secure the services of Ousmane Diomande.
