The refereeing once again affected Liverpool in Saturday's match at Anfield against Aston Villa, which ended in a 1-1 draw in a game corresponding to the penultimate matchday of the Premier League season, a result that practically left the team with no chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

John Brooks was the referee chosen by the FA to referee this match that started off complicated for the Reds as in the 23rd minute the visitors went up on the scoreboard with a goal from midfielder Jacob Ramsey. However, in the second half Liverpool went forward looking to score and managed to do so with a fine finish from Roberto Firmino, who played his last home game for Liverpool, sending the fans into euphoria.

However, it was two decisions by John Brooks that ended up hurting Liverpool as in the first half he had to send off Villains defender Tyron Mix for a hard kick on Cody Gakpo. In the second half he inexplicably disallowed a goal scored by Liverpool for alleged offside, although the play was never made clear.

Klopp's statement

Jurgen Klopp had to watch the game from the stands because of the FA's sanctioning of his remarks against referee Paul Tierney. However, he has now returned to refer to the referee's performance in a post-match press conference: "I didn't see it back. Was it a red card from your point of view? I asked the referee why the offside goal was offside. He explained it to me. He thinks it isn't a deliberate action from the defender, I think it is. VAR isn't sure."
