The brilliant 2021-2022 season of Colombian midfielder Luis Díaz in Europe and with the Colombian national team earned him a place in the list of world football stars nominated for the Ballon D'Or. The player from Guajira, at the service of Liverpool since January, completed a spectacular stage in Europe being champion of the FA Cup and the League Cup with the English club. In addition, in the first part of the season with Porto he scored 16 goals plus another six in the first months of 2022 with the 'reds'.

At the national team level, he was the top scorer of the Copa América in Brazil 2021 with four goals, alongside Lionel Messi. Luís Díaz was chosen as the revelation player of the tournament by CONMEBOL. For this edition of the award that honors the best player in the world, according to France Football magazine, there were four important changes. The most important is that it ceased to be considered from January to December, which implied having to count two half-seasons. In this way, it began to value what has been achieved over a season, which runs from August 2021 to July 2022.

Lists of 30 for men, 20 for women and 10 for the Kopa (young player) and Yashin (goalkeeper) Trophies are currently being drawn up. "In order to present a selection of suitors that is as fair, undisputed and relevant as possible, we have acted to change the process," they shared.

Ballon D’or criteria changing

Finally, through a note in the French newspaper L'Equipe, they clarified which criteria will be taken into account to choose the new Ballon D’Or: “the criteria often gives room for debate, we thought it appropriate to refresh the hierarchy of the constituent elements in the vote for greater consistency and clarity".
